Hope rises in his face. He picks up the Blacknoc book, the pages loose in its cover.
“Careful with that,” I warn.
“Why?”
“There’s something not right with that book. The day I burned it, the pages were bleeding.”
Mr. Alden frowns as he hesitantly skims through the pages. “There’s no blood here, girl.”
I curse, snatching for the book to see for myself. Nothing but white pages and black ink. “Well, maybe because the curse isn’t after you. It’s taunting me!” I slam the book on the table.
“Calm yourself.” He holds up his hand. “Just take a deep breath. No young girl should have to deal with this alone. I will do everything within my power to help you, okay? Let me handle the book while you calm down. We don’t want another fire incident, do we?”
